What are your membership prices like?

 

The Carlson Gracie Team is world known and highly respected. Even with top level instruction we have still managed to set our prices to be competitive and fair. We have a number of different programs and prices to suit everybody’s budget and schedules. Come in and try a few of our classes for FREE and one of our staff will gladly discuss the memberships with you.

What if I want to fight/compete?

There are many avenues for members wishing to compete.

BJJ tournaments, Boxing/Kickboxing/MMA events are all available for members to enter. However, it is only after a serious commitment to the Carlson Gracie Team and to your training, that our instructors will determine whether the student is prepared for  competition.

Can I try a few classes first?

Yes!

In fact we strongly encourage everybody to try a few free classes before becoming a member. We want everybody to enjoy what we offer and to have fun while learning and getting in shape. Taking the time to try the week for free will give you a good idea if you are ready to make the commitment to yourself and to our Team.

Can women join?

Yes, absolutely.

More and more women are seeing the benefits of training in our classes whether for physical benefits or learning necessary self defence skills. Women may participate in any of the classes we offer in addition to the Women’s Only classes. Contact us and try some classes for free!

Do you fight in classes?

For students that have experience, they may participate in light “sparring” or “rolling” to test what they have learned and apply it in a live/simulated situation. However, it is always carefully done so under supervision of one of our experienced instructors.

How are your students graded?

Students are graded in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu using the Jiu-Jitsu belt system.

Different levels are determined by stripe or colour on the student’s belt beginning with white. Master Marcus Soares’ strict grading will determine when the student has achieved his or her next stripe or belt. Belts/stripes are not given out easily however. Students must show great dedication and progress in order to move up the ranks.

Promotions are done only a few times a year…maybe. Unlike many other martial arts clubs, we do not have belt testing often. Promoting students too often and too soon gives the student a flase sense of accomplishment and false sense of confidence. Our intructors must see progress before promotions.

What is Muay Thai

Muay Thai, or Thai Boxing is often compared to kickboxing. Unlike American Kickboxing, however, Muay Thai allows for elbow and knee strikes. This is why it is considered the most effective of all “stand-up” disciplines.

What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

BJJ is a form of martial art which uses leverage and technique to subdue an opponent.

Various chokes and joint manipulation are applied in such a way that, if applied properly, the size of the opponent is irrelevant. No punching, kicking or strikes of any kind are involved. Knowledge of BJJ is an absolute must for MMA practitioners. BJJ is also the preferred form of self-defence and used widely amongst law enforcement, security and military personnel.

Who is Carlson Gracie

Carlson Gracie, (August 13, 1932 – February 1, 2006)

He was the eldest son of Carlos Gracie, founder of the Gracie Jiu Jitsu variant of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with his uncle Hélio Gracie, and learned the art from his uncle and his father. He was a member of the Gracie family.

Carlson Gracie would later split from Hélio Gracie’s group. He founded one of the top mixed martial arts teams, which spawned many champions. In 2000, following a financial dispute, many of Carlson Gracie’s students would split from him to form another MMA team, the Brazilian Top Team. The so called creontes by master Carlson Gracie.

Carlson fought a total of eighteen vale tudo fights, with only one loss to Luta Livre fighter Euclides Pereira in a fight that was held in Bahia. His first fight was in March 17, 1953 against capoeira practitioner Luiz “Cirandinha” Aguiar, apprentice of Mestre Sinhozinho. Carlson won by submission due to mounted strikes after over an hour of fighting. His second match was a draw against another capoeirista, Wilson “Passarito” Oliveira, in May 1953. Carlson had a rematch with Passarito in March 1954 in the longest fight of his career, which he won in the fifth 30 minute round. Most notable are his four matches with Valdemar Santana, who had defeated his uncle Hélio Gracie in a fabled match in May 1955. He beat Santana in the first fight avenging his family. In October 1955 Carlson fought Santana to a draw in a Jiu-Jitsu match. In 1956 and 1957 Carlson won two fights and in 1959 they fought to a draw.

Carlson Gracie trained many top competitors such as Ricardo De La Riva, Allan Goes, Murilo Bustamante, Mario Sperry, Wallid Ismail, Pablo Popovitch, Vauvenargues “Marinho” Vicentini, Kevin Christopher, Andre Madiz, Andre Pederneiras, Julio Fernandez, Ricardo Liborio, Marcus Soares, Rodrigo Medeiros, Ricardo “Rey” Diogo, Marcelo Alonso, Mario Sukata and was also responsible for introducing and mastering Vitor Belfort into Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. Carlson Gracie also trained Stephan Bonnar, a finalist in the UFC reality show The Ultimate Fighter 1. He was in Bonnar’s corner during his fight against eventual The Ultimate Fighter winner Forrest Griffin. He is the author of a book on the subject of Jiu Jitsu titled Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: For Experts Only, which includes his student Julio “Foca” Fernandez.

The oldest son of Carlos Gracie, who founded Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in Rio de Janeiro during the 1920s, Carlson reigned as world champion for thirty years covering the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s.

Carlson catapulted to fame at the age of 23 when he avenged the defeat of his uncle Helio Gracie. A former student of Helio’s, Waldemar Santana, had defeated the much older Helio during a match in 1955. That match lasted four hours. Carlson’s rematch with Santana in 1956 was a much shorter affair: four rounds of vicious vale-tudo combat came to draw.

After teaching at his uncle’s academy for several years, he opened his own, where over the past thirty years many of the greatest names in Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Artists have trained as members of the famed Carlson Gracie Arrebentacao Team.

Carlson’s influence on no-holds-barred fighting is extensive as well, for the style of Jiu-Jitsu he taught at his academy was distinct from that being taught by Helio. While Helio’s brand of Jiu-Jitsu emphasized defensive techniques aiming to allow the smaller and weaker to defeat the stronger opponent, Carlson and his brothers Carley Gracie and Rolls Gracie favored a much more active, ‘warrior style’ of Jiu-Jitsu that encouraged physical prowess and barraging your opponent with a series of attacks.

Carlson Gracie died on February 1, 2006, in Chicago, Illinois, of heart failure, apparently the result of complications of kidney stones (and possibly his pre-existing diabetes), following a hospitalisation of several days. At the time of his death he was a ninth degree red belt and was referred to as Grandmaster.

How Much Are Your Memberships?

Our membership rates are set very competitively. For the amount of classes included in memberships and for the experienced instructors teaching, we know our members get great value for their dues. You may see all membership options HERE.

Do I Need Equipment To Participate?

Just like any sport there is equipment or attire necessary to participate in the classes. The necessary gear will depend on the Programs you have signed up for. Equipment may include a Jiu-Jitsu Uniform, Boxing Gloves, Shinpads, Headgear, Mouthguard, and/or appropriate workout attire. Items may be purchased at the Club for your convenience.

Do You Have Classes For Beginners?

Anybody is able to learn from all the classes that we offer. We focus heavily on the basic techniques always which builds the foundation for more advanced techniques. Whether you are a beginner or advanced student it is essential to master basic skills first. Beginners are always welcome.

Can I Try Classes Before I Join?

Our classes will be rewarding and also challenging but we want you to try it out first. Once you have completed the appropriate registration forms, a free week trial will be included in all memberships to ensure you are enjoying what we have to offer. After your week trial there is no commitment to join if you find its not for you.

Do You Have Classes for Women?

Women are more than welcome to participate in any of the classes we offer. But for those who prefer the comfort of training with only women, we offer various Women’s Only classes throughout the year. Take a look at our schedule to see available Women’s Only classes.

What Do I Need To Do To Compete?

Strong dedication to training and learning is a must. You will not have the opportunity to represent our Club in competition without fully committing to the Academy and your training first. Our experienced instructors will then determine who is ready to step into the ring or cage.

Do I Have To Compete?

Our student are not required to compete and never pushed to compete. MMA is a fantastic way to simply get in shape while developing the mind at the same time.

Although, our club highly encourages students to challenge themselves by competing in order to grow as a person and mixed martial artist. We strongly believe good competition helps in the development of a person’s character by learning how to deal with wins and losses…just as in life. We have also found the challenge of competing surges a person’s ability to learn as they are now training for a purpose and goal other than simply for recreation. An increased focus and intention to train is also clearly seen.

Our Academy competes throughout the year in BJJ, Boxing, Kickboxing and MMA.

Do I Have To Come To Every Class?

You do not have to attend every class and, as a matter of fact, we advise not coming too much to avoid burning out. The training we offer can be intense and taxing on the body and time to recuperate is as important as training itself. There is also a lot to information to take in. Of course, a balance of rest and training is different for everyone especially for those who compete vs those who are recreational members. For the average participant we recommend up to 3-4 times a week as a good amount of time to receive amazing fitness benefits and a great amount of knowledge but still leaving you wanting more.
